About these terms
These terms cover your use of DroidStar DMR for iOS (“the app”) and the website vu3lvo.com (“the website”). Both are provided by Rohith Namboothiri, callsign VU3LVO (“we”, “us”), an individual developer in Bengaluru, India. By using the app or the website, you agree to these terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you don't agree, please don't use them.
About the name. These terms apply only to DroidStar DMR, an app developed independently by VU3LVO. It is a separate product from DroidStar by Doug McLain and from any other app with a similar name. It isn't affiliated with, endorsed by or a replacement for the original DroidStar, apart from being built on its open-source code under the GPL-3.0.
The app's source code is licensed separately under the GNU General Public License v3.0 (see Open-source licence). Nothing in these terms limits the rights the GPL gives you.
Who can use DroidStar DMR
- The app is intended for licensed amateur radio operators. You must hold a valid licence and transmit only under your own callsign or as your licence allows (for example, under supervision).
- To use DMR you'll need your own DMR ID, issued free by RadioID.net.
- Unlicensed listeners may use features that don't transmit, where local law allows.
- If you're under 18, please use the app and the request form with the knowledge of a parent or guardian.
Operating on the air
DroidStar DMR is a tool, like a radio. You're responsible for how you use it on the air. When you transmit, you agree to:
- follow the rules of your licensing authority, such as WPC in India, the FCC in the US or Ofcom in the UK, and the regulations of any country you operate in or from
- identify with your callsign as required, and never use someone else's callsign or DMR ID
- follow the policies of every network, Talk Group, reflector and node you connect to, including the BrandMeister policies
- keep transmissions within the amateur service: no encryption, no business or commercial traffic, no music or broadcasting, and nothing obscene, abusive or deliberately disruptive
- keep any network passwords you enter private, and use only credentials you're entitled to use
Network operators may block callsigns or IDs that break their rules. We can't override their decisions.
Open-source licence
DroidStar DMR for iOS is a modified version of DroidStar by Doug McLain and is released under the GNU General Public License v3.0. The source code is available at github.com/rohithzmoi/Droidstar-DMR. You may use, study, share and modify it under the GPL's terms. Where the GPL and these terms differ in what they allow you to do with the source code, the GPL applies.
The binary builds distributed through TestFlight are also subject to Apple's terms for TestFlight and the App Store, which are agreements between you and Apple.
Beta software & TestFlight
- The app is beta software under active development. Features may change, move, be removed or not work as expected. Live Transcription is marked Beta and may make mistakes.
- Invites are sent at our discretion, based on available tester places. Apple limits TestFlight to 10,000 testers. Submitting the request form doesn't guarantee an invite.
- TestFlight builds expire after the period Apple sets. We may stop distributing builds or remove testers at any time, for example to keep places available or if these terms are broken.
- Feedback, bug reports and ideas you send are very welcome. By sending them, you let us use them to improve DroidStar DMR without owing you anything. Many features started this way, and contributors may be thanked by name with their permission.
Third-party networks & services
The app connects to independent networks and services we don't own or control. These include BrandMeister, YSF, M17, P25, NXDN and D-STAR reflectors, AllStar nodes, RadioID.net, QRZ, APRS services and model or directory hosts. The website is hosted on Vercel and uses Cloudflare Turnstile and Resend, and links to Buy Me a Coffee, PayPal, WhatsApp and GitHub.
Their availability, content and policies are their own, and your use of them is governed by their terms. DroidStar DMR isn't affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Apple, BrandMeister, Cloudflare or any other network or service named on this site, unless stated otherwise.
Donations
- Donations through Buy Me a Coffee or PayPal are entirely voluntary gifts that help cover Apple developer fees, test devices and development time. They keep DroidStar DMR free for everyone.
- A donation isn't a purchase. It doesn't buy a licence, support plan, priority, feature or TestFlight place, and DroidStar DMR never puts features behind payment.
- Donations are processed by those platforms under their terms. Because they are gifts, they are generally non-refundable. If you made a mistake, such as a wrong amount or a duplicate, email us within 14 days and we'll do our best to help. Your statutory rights are not affected.
- Contributors are thanked on the contributors wall by callsign or first name only. Amounts are never shown, because every contribution counts equally. You can ask to stay anonymous or be removed at any time.
Using this website
Please don't:
- submit false information or someone else's details, or try to get TestFlight access for someone who doesn't hold a licence
- send spam or automated submissions, or try to get around Turnstile, rate limits or other protections
- probe, scan or attack the website or its infrastructure, except for responsible security research reported to us under security.txt
- use the website in any way that breaks the law or harms others
Search engines and AI assistants are welcome to index and cite this website, and we publish llms.txt to help them. When quoting it, please attribute DroidStar DMR by VU3LVO and link to vu3lvo.com.

The DroidStar DMR by VU3LVO logo, the website's design and its original text and graphics are © 2026 Rohith Namboothiri. You're welcome to use the logo and screenshots to write about or link to DroidStar DMR, as long as you don't suggest an endorsement we haven't given. For anything else, just ask.
The app's source code is covered by the GPL-3.0 as described above. Apple, iPhone, iPad, Dynamic Island and TestFlight are trademarks of Apple Inc. All other names and marks belong to their owners and are used only to describe compatibility.
No warranty
The app and the website are provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied. This includes warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy and non-infringement, to the fullest extent the law allows. This matches sections 15 and 16 of the GPL-3.0. We don't promise that the app or the networks it connects to will be uninterrupted, error-free or always available. We also don't promise that transcriptions, lookups or directory data will be accurate.
Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, we aren't liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or exemplary damages. That includes lost data, lost contacts, regulatory penalties or missed communications arising from your use of, or inability to use, the app, the website or any third-party network. You are responsible for operating within your licence.
Where liability can't be excluded, our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim (normally zero, since DroidStar DMR is free and donations are gifts) or INR 1,000.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that can't legally be limited, such as liability for fraud, or for death or personal injury caused by negligence. Nothing in these terms affects your rights as a consumer under the laws of the country where you live.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of India. The courts of Bengaluru, Karnataka have jurisdiction, unless the consumer protection laws of your country give you the right to bring a claim in your local courts. Before going to court, please email us. Almost every problem can be solved with a friendly message between hams.
Changes & contact
We may update these terms as DroidStar DMR grows, for example when new features or networks are added. We'll change the date at the top and, for meaningful changes, say so clearly on this site. If you keep using the app or website after a change, you accept the updated terms. If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest still applies.
